Humanity’s reflection on life and death has a long and rich history. Western philosophers such as Socrates and Plato explored the nature of death, while ancient Egyptian and Chinese cultures developed rituals and beliefs that reflect deep respect for both life and death. In The Analects (Book XI, “Xianjin”), Confucius famously said, “If you do not yet understand life, how can you understand death?”—a quote widely known across Chinese communities.
This perspective suggests that understanding life should come before worrying about death. Yet, we also uphold the complementary view: “If you do not yet understand death, how can you truly understand life?” Rather than avoiding the subject of death, we should face it with openness and reflection, allowing it to deepen our appreciation for life.
Life and Death Education is thus built on the foundation of creating “a good end for the departed and a peaceful farewell for the living.” In essence, it seeks harmony between life and death. Based on this vision, the Life and Death Education programs offered by CanCare Centre aim to:
- Explore the value and essence of life
- Understand the meaning of death
- Live meaningfully and make the most of our remaining time
- Leave behind lasting and beautiful blessings
- Promote spiritual peace and personal growth
